WE NEED TO BE AWARE EVERY SINGLE DAY — September is National Suicide Prevention Month -- SOCIAL ISOLATION - Trauma - Abuse - Addiction -- They Are All Connected
September is National Suicide Prevention Month — I always say we should be aware of the people around us 365 days a year, and be a helping hand whenever needed.
What brings a person to the thoughts of suicide?
There are many answers to this loaded question! Depression, trauma, abuse, neglect, illness, PTSD, Addiction, etc. We can now add social isolation to the list as we have just made it through a horrendous year with Covid-19 and the restrictions placed upon all of us, especially our youth!!
I can go on and on with this list, but the common factor to all of this is the end results - Suicidal thoughts and actions.
To get to the root of the problem, you have to dig deeper! Do not look at a drug addict and say, “they put themselves there” — Look at a person who is addicted and ask the important questions, “How and why did you get here?” These same questions apply to all of the above.
When trying to help someone who is struggling you must change your own mindset first, and then move forward to try to understand the “BIGGER PICTURE”! It can be very hard to understand, especially if you are already emotionally invested (family & friends), but to truly help someone in need, you have to put yourself in their shoes, and try to think from their view and perspective. Not an easy task, that I can guarantee you, but one that is necessary to find understanding.
Of course, listening and being that hand in the dark also plays a big part, we can help someone through those dark moments just by being there to offer a kind word or two, or a hug and a comforting smile.

I wrote this poem in dedication for all who are struggling with addiction…
ADDICTION
When you hear the word addiction — What does one think?
Wanting
Out of control
Loss of sense
Imagine looking around, nobody to be found, cold and alone,
No happy home…
Your only friend that needle in your vein… Seems so crystal clear, so pure, looking to take
Another tour…
Around the world is 60 seconds — I do say, make all my pain go away…
With the slightest pinch, I am thrust into a world of delusional fantasy, filled
With warmth and empowerment…
In the blink of an eye, my warmth turns to cold, my empowerment turns
To shame, how do I stop this horrible game… The game of how high can
I fly, will I live or will I die.
Psychedelic lights shine so bright,
Blinking again there is no sight… Out there in
The darkness and rain, feeling ever ounce of my pain… What was once crystal clear
Traveling through my veins, has clouded my thoughts brought on the rain…
The rain of my sorrow, pulling me down, drowning in my puddle of
Horror so profound… What am I to do, a lost soul, true, true!
How do I fight another day, make all my misery go away… Do I indulge
In another prick, or do I fight that evil Stick?
How will I find the light? Who will help me win the fight?
Where do you turn when there is no where to go, how do I let people know?
Help me, Help me I do scream, can anyone hear me, am I going to be seen? Out there in the darkness, there has to be light a guardian angel to help me fight… Who in the world could that be, who wants to
Set me free?
MY VISION…
On that day, that special day my angel will help guide the way, washing me down with her eternal light, blessing me, guiding me holding me tight… Thrusting me back to the light of day, keeping me humble every step of the way, saving my life my angel she did, never gave up, refuse to quit…
I owe my life to her, I do, a gift from God so pure so true… Now I move forward on my way, helping others so they can stay….
