2021 MA COMMISSION OF THE STATUS OF WOMEN (MCSW) HEROINE AWARD GOES TO LISA ZARCONE

Lisa Zarcone - MA National Ambassador for Naasca (National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse) - Child & Mental Health Advocate - Author - Public Speaker - Blogger - Podcast Enthusiast - Radio Personality - Inspirationalist

I am humbled and honored to receive this incredible award, and to be nominated by State Representative Orlando Ramos. I have been working very hard to bring further awareness towards child abuse/safety and mental health/illness/stigmas. I am currently advocating for more funding to provide mental health programs in our schools. Our youth need support and I believe timing is everything! The time is now!

I am also working on finishing book 2 “The Book of Joann” - my mother’s story and journey with her battle with mental illness and how it affects everyone connected, especially the children. I will use this story and my personal memoir “The Unspoken Truth” as a platform to continue my efforts in raising awareness, breaking the silence and ending the stigmas attached to mental health, abuse and trauma.

My hope is to continue connecting with community through my social media, podcast, work shops and presentations! I am a voice for the voiceless and I stand strong!

Thank you for this award!

The MCSW is a state-established body charged with reviewing the status of women in Massachusetts and offering recommendations regarding policy that would improve access to opportunities and equality.

The purpose of the Commission is to advance women and girls toward full equity in all areas of life and to promote rights and opportunities for all women and girls. The mission of the Commission is to provide a permanent, effective voice for women and girls across Massachusetts. The Commission stands for fundamental freedoms, basic human rights and the full enjoyment of life for all women and girls throughout their lives.

The Commission represents and recognizes all women, regardless of their age, race, color, creed, abilities, socio-economic status, immigration status, sexual orientation, or gender identity at birth.

Commonwealth Heroines

Each June we celebrate female Commonwealth community leaders

 Dear Lisa Zarcone,

Congratulations! It is our great pleasure to inform you that you have been selected by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women as one of the Commonwealth Heroines of 2021.

Annual Commonwealth Heroine honors go to incredible women who have been recommended by legislators from their districts and selected for their contributions to their community and the Commonwealth. Commonwealth Heroines are women who don’t always make the news, but truly make the difference in their communities, businesses, or volunteer endeavors. You have been selected because you are a woman who, without fanfare or recognition, uses your time, talent, spirit, and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of others. The Massachusetts legislator that recommended you for this honor is Representative Orlando Ramos.

THIS AWARD IS GIVEN TO….

The Commonwealth Heroines are women who don’t make the news, but make the difference. Thousands of women in every community of the state perform unheralded acts on a daily basis that make our homes, neighborhoods, cities, and towns better places to live. Commonwealth Heroines use their time, talent, spirit, and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of others in their community. They are mentors, volunteers, and innovators who strive to protect and represent the interests of seniors, victims of violence, children, immigrants, and other vulnerable populations. They are the glue that keeps a community together.

Each year the Commission partners with state legislators to identify women who make outstanding contributions to their organizations and communities. Each legislator is encouraged to submit one woman from their constituency as a means of recognizing their invaluable community efforts. We accept only recommendations from state legislators but if you know of an ideal candidate, we recommend that you reach out to your representatives to offer a suggestion. Please note the Commission launches the Commonwealth Heroine initiative in February of each year and are in touch with legislators shortly thereafter seeking submission.

Due to current COVID-19 regulations and guidelines, this year’s Commonwealth Heroine Celebration will be held virtually. All Commonwealth Heroines will be invited to attend the virtual celebration on Wednesday, June 23, 2021. More details will follow.
