Triumph TALKS with Melanie Hansen Davis - We Discuss "The Book of Joann" - Powerful Reality

Melanie and I dig deep into this book and discuss the depths of mental illness and how it affects everyone involved. Powerful, Profund, Gripping!

“The Book of Joann” is a gripping second book by Lisa Zarcone that tells the story of her mother who waged a lifelong battle with mental illness. This book showcases the reality of her mental health struggles and how the systems that should have intervened continually let her down. Joann was frequently institutionalized where the horrors she endured were exacerbated while Lisa, even as a very young child, would be accountable and punished for her mother’s breakdowns. Lisa shares why she wrote her mother’s tragic and often shocking story… so that she could bring to light how we are failing to help so many who struggle with mental health. Lisa points out that people deserve to have their mental health cared for as much as a visibly sick person needs treatment. Lisa wrote this book specifically at the request of her mother, Joann, who wanted to be heard and felt she never had a voice. Joann went through her whole life being misunderstood and judged because of her severe mental illness. It robbed Joann of so much as she got lost in this difficult disease. Lisa wrote from a place of compassion and understanding as she brought her mother to life, showing the world who Joann truly was and how deeply she struggled. Despite being the primary recipient of her mother’s manic rage and abuse (both mental and physical), a mother-daughter bond held strong through hope, faith, and the never-ending courage to continue to move forward, facing every challenge head-on… sometimes, literally. This is truly a spirited story, one that will be remembered long after you are done reading it and which has the potential of bringing hope and change to this often-taboo topic. #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #childsafety #childrenmatter
